Case Study: How a Regional Moving Company Doubled Booked Jobs With Map Pack + GEO Optimization — OnyxRank

Sep 22, 2026 ·OnyxRank Team

**Industry:** Residential & Commercial Moving Services

**Plan:** [OnyxRank](https://onyxrank.com) Growth

**Timeline:** 5 months

**Key Result:** Booked jobs up **107%**; Map Pack top-3 in 5 of 6 service cities (up from 1 of 6); quote requests from organic + AI search up **163%**

The Challenge

The client (anonymized at their request — we'll call them Anchor Point Moving) runs residential and light-commercial moving crews across six cities in a single metro corridor. They'd built the business on referrals and a well-maintained truck fleet, but growth had stalled: every new lead was costing more, and word-of-mouth alone couldn't fill the calendar during slow months.

An audit at onboarding showed why organic growth had flatlined:

  • **Map Pack visibility in only 1 of 6 service cities** — their home base — despite operating full crews in all six
  • **A single "Areas We Serve" page** listing all six cities in a bullet list, with no unique content, no local landmarks, no city-specific pricing or crew availability
  • **Seasonal blind spot**: zero content targeting "moving during [month]," "apartment movers near me," or "long-distance movers [city]" — all high-intent terms their competitors owned
  • **AI Overviews and ChatGPT never mentioned them** when we tested queries like "best moving company near [service city]" — competitors with thinner sites but structured content were getting cited instead
  • **Review count under 60 across all locations**, with several 1-2 star reviews from a scheduling issue two years prior still dragging down their average

Their operations manager summed it up: "We're booked solid in our home city and quiet everywhere else we drive trucks. People just don't know we cover those areas."

The Approach

[OnyxRank](https://onyxrank.com) ran a combined local SEO automation and GEO optimization program built around three priorities:

**1. City-specific landing pages with real local signal.** [OnyxRank](https://onyxrank.com) replaced the single "Areas We Serve" list with six standalone pages — one per city — each covering neighborhood-level detail (apartment complexes, common HOA move-in rules, stair/elevator considerations), local pricing ranges, and city-specific Service + LocalBusiness schema. Generic "we serve this city too" copy doesn't rank; pages written as if that city were the only one they served do.

**2. Seasonal and intent-based content clusters.** OnyxRank built out a content cluster around moving-decision content — "moving cost calculator," "best time of year to move," "apartment vs. house moving checklist," "long-distance vs. local movers pricing" — structured specifically to answer the exact questions AI Overviews and chat assistants surface when users research a move. Clear, direct answer blocks near the top of each page made the content easy for AI crawlers to extract and cite.

**3. Review recovery and generation at scale.** [OnyxRank](https://onyxrank.com) deployed automated post-move review requests sent same-day (timed to when customers are relieved the move is over, not days later when only complaints get remembered), plus a response campaign addressing the older negative reviews publicly and professionally — which research shows recovers trust even when the review itself can't be removed.

Technical work ran alongside content: fixing duplicate title tags across the six city pages, adding FAQ schema to capture "People Also Ask" placements, and cleaning up NAP inconsistencies across 40+ directory listings that had accumulated from three different past marketing vendors.

The Results

After 5 months:

  • **Map Pack top-3 in 5 of 6 service cities** for "movers near me" and "moving company [city]" (up from 1 of 6)
  • **Booked jobs up 107%** month-over-month by month 5, with the four newly-visible cities accounting for most of the gain
  • **Quote requests from organic + AI-referred traffic up 163%**, including confirmed AI Overview citations for three of the six city pages
  • **Google reviews grew from 58 to 191**, average rating up from 3.9 to 4.6 stars
  • **Cost-per-booked-job from paid channels dropped 22%**, as the company began throttling paid spend in cities where organic now carried the load

The operations manager's read on it: "We stopped being a secret in five of our six cities. The trucks are the same — the phone just rings more."

Key Takeaways

  • **If you serve multiple cities, "serving" isn't the same as "ranking."** A bullet-list service-area page tells customers you operate there; it does nothing for Google or AI search unless each city gets dedicated, specific content.
  • **Seasonal, decision-stage content captures demand competitors ignore.** Most local service businesses only build "hire us" pages. Content answering the questions people ask *before* they're ready to hire captures them earlier — and gets cited by AI answer engines that thin, sales-only pages never will.
  • **Old negative reviews don't have to sink you — but ignoring them does.** A public, professional response plus a steady stream of new reviews shifts both the average rating and the buyer's read on how the business handles problems.
  • **Local and AI search reward the same fundamentals.** The city-specific detail and clear answer structure that won Map Pack rankings are the same signals that earned AI Overview citations — there's no separate playbook required.
